Today is the sixth month that endurance athletes everywhere have gone without conventional racing in 2020. It’s also the first opportunity cyclists can compete using GPSRace.

We are very excited to announce the soft launch of our website, gpsrace.cc. Started by cyclists with tech backgrounds, GPSRace is a platform that facilitates socially-distanced*, real-world competition and requires nothing more than a GPS-enabled device, like your smartphone, smartwatch, or bike computer.

Creating a race takes less than five minutes: upload a GPX file of the route, set some race-specific options, and share the link with your buddies. To participate, simply register for the race on our website, ride the route while recording with your GPS-tracker, and upload your GPX activity file when you get home. That’s simple.

GPSRace calculates your overall time on the route and ranks you by gender, age group, and other categories. To reduce the temptation to run stoplights or stop signs, race creators can mark “neutral” segments, which don’t count towards your overall time. Race creators can also designate “sprint” or “climb” segments, and fastest cumulative time on these is deemed winner of the (virtual) Green or Polka-Dot Jerseys, respectively.

Though we can’t race the usual way right now, we can still compete — we hope you’ll join GPSRace today!

*During the pandemic, it is expected that all activities take place solo. Besides the unfair advantage, drafting puts you at risk of contracting COVID-19. Please recreate responsibly, both by obeying laws of the road and doing your part to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.
